Your Library Card

Getting a card, renewing materials, placing holds, etc.

Goal

The goal of the library's circulation policy is to make the best possible use of the library's collection by the greatest number of borrowers.

Who can get a card
A full service library card is available to anyone who lives in the Scio city limits or lives outside the city limits and has purchased a nonresident card for $30.00.  This entitles you to check out books, videos, books on tape, and magazines free of charge.  It also enables you to request materials from other libraries by Interlibrary Loan.

Children in eighth grade and younger are eligible for a library card regardless of their place of residence. A parent or guardian must sign the application.  This card limits you to borrowing items from the children's section only.  Parents are responsible for any charges incurred on a child's card.

Nonresident teens may purchase a card for $5.00.  You are permitted to borrow three items at one time with this card.

All cards are valid for 12 months and must be renewed at the end of that period.

How to Get Your Card
Fill out a library card application and bring identification, which shows your current physical address, such as:

  • Driver's license
  • Piece of official mail with current post mark, such as a bank statement or utility bill

Borrowing Limits
If you have a full service card, you may borrow as many items as you like.  With a child's card, you may borrow as many items as you like within the children or teen sections of the library only.  Teen cards limit you to borrowing three items at a time from any area of the library.

Each loan period is 14 days.  If the due date falls on a holiday when the library is closed, the loan period will be extended until the next day that the library is open.  The loan period for Interlibrary Loans is determined by the lending library.

Placing Holds
Hold requests may be placed on any circulating item.  Because of the demand of hold items, the item will be held for 3 days only.  When more than one hold request has been placed on an item, a queue will be established, and each request will be filled in the order in which it was received.

Renewing Your Borrowed Items
All circulating materials, except those on the "New Books" shelf, may be renewed for 2 additional 14-day periods, unless another patron has placed a hold request for the item.  The books off of the "New Books" shelf may not be renewed.  You may renew in person or by calling during library hours.

Interlibrary loans may be renewed only with prior approval of the owning library.

Computers

Use of the computers and access to the Internet and in-library databases is free to everyone.  Your use of the computer is limited to 30 minutes, if someone is waiting.

If you are 16 years old or younger, you may access the Internet if you are accompanied by your parent or guardian.  If your parents are unable to come to the library with you, they may sign a permission slip for you, which will be provided by the librarian.  Use of the Internet is then limited to homework only.

Library Fees, Damaged and Lost Materials
The fee for overdue library materials are 5 cents per day, per item.

The fee for Interlibrary Loan is $3.00, plus any additional fee that the lending library may charge.

If you lose or damage an item, you will be asked to pay the replacement cost.  Payment is considered to be a purchase of the item by the patron.  As such, there will be no refund after items have been paid for, even if found later.

If you lose your card, notify your library immediately so that your card may be voided, relieving you of responsibility for any additional materials borrowed with it.  A fee of $1.50 will be charged for a replacement card.

If you accumulate charges of $5.00 or more, you will lose your borrowing privileges until the charges are paid.  If overdue items are not returned within 45 days of the due date, the library assumes they are lost and sends a bill which includes fines and replacemant costs of the material.

Any exceptions to the above procedurew will only be at the discretion of the Library Director.

Privacy of Library Circulation Records
The circulation records of the Scio Public Library are confidential and not subject to freedom of information, regardless of the source of inquiry.  Circulation records, if they exist, are confidential to the library and staff and shall not be made available to anyone except pursuant to a valid court order.
